April 12, 13 Wood/Gas/Soda Firing Workshop
The first firing workshop at my new studio will be conducted using the catenary gas/wood/soda kiln. We will meet Friday morning to do some glazing, then start loading immediately. Participants may bring 5 cu ft of bisque fired work made from Cone 10 clay. If you are unsure of what clay to use, Continental Clay’s “B-clay” is an excellent choice. The firing will start Friday immediately after loading, and finish Saturday afternoon. Sunday we will lay the arch brick for the new tube wood kiln, or you can take the day to relax, head into Denver, go skiing, etc. Unloading will be Monday, and if you cannot be here for pickup we can arrange shipment of your work back to you. I’ll provide some slips, glazes, wadding, meals, shared accommodations, etc. for up to 3 people. We’ll learn about loading, firing, atmosphere, and how to introduce soda for specific effects. I’ll spend some time doing some wet clay demos as well, and discuss “good” decisions when it comes to making work for atmospheric kilns. The pizza oven will be hot for cooking all kinds of goodies. Check the “Shop” page to register, and/or send an email for more info.
